Spotlight on: The Merrick Gables Homes

Merrick is a lovely suburban neighborhood located on Long Island’s south shore; wonderfully close to beaches, major highways, shopping and dining, with great schools to boot. Just 30 miles outside of Manhattan, Merrick is a quick and easy commute to NYC.

The Gables neighborhood, named after Clark Gable is a hidden gem. Built during the 1920’s for Fox Studios, the area features approximately 350 California-style homes in an 8 block area south of Sunrise Highway. The homes originally built were sold for $8,000-$10,000 dollars and were marketed to the Hollywood elite as a “miniature Hollywood” for those stars acting in theatres on Broadway or in the movie studios in Long Island City. Errol Flynn and Ed Begley are some of the more famous homeowners of that time.

More recently, the HBO Miniseries “Mildred Pierce” was filmed in the Gables section, as homes are reminiscent of the MP HBO Henryhomes in Glendale, Los Angeles during the 1930’s.  The LA Times stated 4/3/2011: “The (HBO) production designer did extensive research at the Glendale Historical Society and viewed films such as “Bonnie and Clyde” and “Paper Moon” for inspiration. He found the ideal Southern California exterior for the Pierce residence, in Merrick on Long Island, New York.” Two homes on Henry Street were used for the exterior sets.

The Gables homes are marked by consistent styling and materials such as tile roofs, stucco exteriors and stained glass windows. There are a few different models of both ranches and colonials ranging in square footage, featuring 3 bedrooms and at least 1 full large bathroom. Lot sizes are at least 50 to 80 feet wide. The homes were built for entertaining, having large dining and living rooms at the front of the homes and sleeping quarters in the back or upstairs. The Colonial style homes feature a magnificent 2 story catwalk staircase and some ranch models have large sunken living rooms with ceiling heights of 19 feet. All of the homes include endearing details such as stained glass windows, oversized Spanish style fireplaces, intricate hardwood floors and arches over interior passageways. Each home, unique and different, is truly a beautiful site to see.
